Pillow Frequently Asked Questions
How do I adjust my pillow?
Your WakeWell Pillow is easy to adjust. We have found the best way to adjust the fill is as follows:
- Get a bag, box or some sort of reusable container to hold any fill you remove.
- Grab the pillow by the zipper end, trying to only grab fabric. Then give the pillow several vigorous shakes downward to get the latex fill to compress in each channel. This will create a gap near the zipper end of the pillow making it easier to open the zipper without the fill spilling out. This also helps to see which channels have more fill than others.
- Open the zipper to expose the channel ends. Grab a handful of fill from any of the channels and place it in your reusable container. Remove as much fill as you want to adjust the pillow to your liking. In addition to removing fill, you may just need to move fill from one channel to the next.
- Once you have your pillow adjusted to your liking, zip it back up, grab the other end of the pillow and shake it up a bit to distribute the fill.
- Now test it out. Lay on it to see if you like it. If not, make some more adjustments.
- Finally, sleep on it for a one to three nights before making more adjustments. It may take a few nights for your body to get used to having the right support. For some people it can take two to three weeks before they get comfortable. If you are adjusting your pillow nightly your body may never be able to get adjusted.
Notes:
You may want to remove different amounts of fill from some of the channels to create a contour within your pillow. Some people like to have more fill in the side channels and less in the center two channels to give better neck support, others like all channels to have an equal amount of fill to have a uniform thickness, and some like to create somewhat of a wedge shaped pillow. Others may want to adjust one side of the pillow to be good for back sleeping and the opposite side adjusted for side or stomach sleeping. This is great for people that sleep in multiple positions. There is no right way to adjust your pillow.
Keep in mind that even small amounts of fill can make a big difference. Sometimes all you need is to add or remove one small handful to get your pillow just right. These micro-adjustments can make a difference between having a good pillow and having a great pillow. No other pillow has this amount of adjustability!
What should I do with the fill I remove?
We recommend you store the fill in a re-sealable bag or box. This is especially important in the initial adjustment period, because you may want to add it back as you make adjustments to your pillow. It is also important to keep the removed fill for the long-term, because your pillow may compress slightly (although this is limited with latex foam pillows), or you may just want to increase the loft in your pillow in the future. if you make a return under our 120-Night, No-Risk, Sleep Satisfaction Guarantee you will need to include any removed fill with your return.
How long does it take to get comfortable on this pillow?
Some people will find their WakeWell Pillow comfortable right out of the box on their first night. For most people though, it may take a few nights for your body to get used to having proper support. For others, it may take two to three weeks before they get comfortable. If you are adjusting your pillow nightly your body may never be able to get adjusted. However, once your body is adjusted, you likely won’t ever want to sleep on another pillow again!
I slept on my pillow for a night and woke up sore! What should I do?
While we never want our customers to wake up sore, we realize it may take some time for your body to get acclimated to the support your new WakeWell Pillow provides. If you are waking up with a sore neck, there are a few possibilities to consider. Try to determine if your pillow has the appropriate amount of fill to maintain proper neck alignment (e.g., is it too high, or too low?). It may be that your pillow has too much fill in it and you need to remove some. Or it may be that you took too much fill out and it isn’t providing enough support. If your issue is one of these two, by all means adjust the fill before sleeping on it again because no amount of time will make it feel better. If, however, you feel like you have the right amount of fill, we encourage you to keep sleeping on it for a few nights. After a few nights, you should be able to tell if you need to make some micro-adjustments to your pillow to dial it in just right. Over time your pain should start to subside and you will notice you are sleeping better as a result of getting proper support.
I've heard latex pillows are hard. Are these pillows hard?
Absolutely not! WakeWell Pillows feel like sleeping on a cloud. Many people claim that latex pillows are hard. This is likely because they were sleeping on a pillow made with a very dense batch of latex foam, however, latex foam can be made with different densities.
Some companies will make pillows using only their high density foam cutoffs from mattress making because they don’t want to buy additional lower density foam to balance out the comfort of the pillow. This can lead to a very dense and hard pillow.
High quality latex pillows like ours are made using either a combination of high, medium and low density foams, or using only a specified density foam to achieve a desired feel and level of support. By doing this, we can control the feel and supportiveness of the pillow.
Are these pillows good for pillow fights?
While we love a good pillow fight, we don’t recommend using your WakeWell Pillow in a pillow fight. First, this is an improper use of your pillow and will void the warranty if damaged. Second, and more importantly, due to the weight of these pillows we don’t want you to knock someone out!
Pillow Manufacturing Details
Where are the pillows made?
Our pillows are handmade in the USA in Platteville, WI using premium-quality, sustainable materials.
What are the pillows made from?
The WakeWell Pillow cases are made from 100% organic cotton fabric and thread. Depending on the pillow you choose, the fill is either 100% all-natural shredded latex, or a synthetic/natural Talalay latex blend. The high-quality, YKK NATULON® chemically recycled zippers are made from chemically recycled polyester (post consumer), and are perpetually recyclable.
What size are the pillows?
The WakeWell Pillow is available in five sizes:
- Travel: 12″ x 16″ (fits 12″x16″ and larger pillow cases)
- Small: 20″ x 26″ (fits 14″x20″ and larger pillow cases)
- Standard: 20″ x 26″ (fits standard pillow cases)
- Queen: 20″ x 30″ (fits queen pillow cases)
- King: 20″ x 36″ (fits king pillow cases)
Will these pillows fit in a regular size pillow case?
Yes! WakeWell Pillows were specifically designed to look and feel like a normal pillow while providing great support and complete adjustability. They fit in conventionally sized pillow cases per the designated pillow size (standard, queen, king). Our travel and small pillows will fit in what are often labeled as “toddler,” “travel,” “small,” or “futon” size pillow cases.
How much do the pillows weigh?
Our fully stuffed pillows weigh between 4-7 pounds depending on the size of the pillow.
What is the pillow loft?
Pillow loft is how high the pillow stands off a flat surface. All our pillows have an internal 5″ baffle that controls the loft of our pillows to roughly 6″. This will vary depending on how much fill you choose to keep in your pillow. In addition to keeping the fill in place, another benefit of the baffles is that the pillow doesn’t puff up and block your mouth and nose when you sleep on your stomach or side. This allows side and stomach sleepers to breath well, even if they lay in the middle of the pillow.
Pillow Care
Do I need a pillow cover for my WakeWell Pillow?
WakeWell Pillows are made with a luxurious 500-thread count, organic-cotton, sateen fabric. It is very comfortable to sleep directly on the pillow. However, we all sweat and loose dead skin cells as we sleep, the oils from our skin may stain the pillow case, and an unfortunate few drool while they sleep (you know who you are!). For these reasons, we recommend using a removable barrier cover, such as an allergy cover, and a pillow case on your WakeWell Pillow. The barrier cover and pillow case may then be removed and washed on a regular basis.
How do I care for my WakeWell Pillow?
WakeWell Pillows are naturally hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-fungal, thus reducing the need to wash your pillow on a regular basis. WakeWell Pillows should be spot cleaned only. We recommend using a removable barrier cover, such as an allergy cover, on your WakeWell Pillow and a pillow case. The barrier cover and pillow case may then be removed and washed on a regular basis.
Is my WakeWell Pillow washable?
WakeWell Pillows should be spot cleaned only. Washing your WakeWell Pillow will void the warranty because the water may cause the latex fill to degrade quickly. Latex has an open cell structure like a sponge. The latex fill will absorb moisture through these cell openings. The water may then break the cell bonds of the latex foam, causing it to degrade at an increased rate. Plus, it would be very difficult to get the latex foam completely dry due to the open cell structure, even with multiple cycles in the dryer. We recommend using a removable barrier cover, such as an allergy cover, on your WakeWell Pillow. The barrier cover may then be removed and washed on a regular basis.
May I dry-clean my WakeWell Pillow?
WakeWell Pillows should be spot cleaned only. Dry-cleaning your WakeWell Pillow will void the warranty because the chemicals used in the dry-cleaning process may damage the latex fill. We recommend using a removable barrier cover, such as an allergy cover, on your WakeWell Pillow. The barrier cover may then be removed and washed on a regular basis.
But you don't understand, I really need to wash my WakeWell Pillow!
WakeWell Pillows are naturally hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial and anti-fungal, thus reducing the need to wash your pillow on a regular basis. However, we understand, things happen. For these reasons, we recommend using a removable barrier cover, such as an allergy cover, on your WakeWell Pillow. The barrier cover may then be removed and washed on a regular basis. If you still feel the need to wash your pillow, we recommend removing all the latex fill into a separate container. You may then wash the empty pillow cover without voiding your warranty. Just refill your pillow before using it or you may find it to be fairly uncomfortable, however, be aware that the pillow cover may shrink somewhat after running through a dryer. We recommend using the low heat cycle on your dryer, or better yet, air dry it. If the latex fill has gotten wet or damp from a spill, you may place the pillow outside in the sun to let it air dry. The sun also has a bleaching effect which can help kill any bacteria that may be present due to the moisture. We do not recommend putting your pillow in the dryer to speed up the process because the tumbling in the dryer may break down the shredded latex, reducing its loft and support. Putting your WakeWell Pillow through a dryer cycle will void your warranty.
